Jealous, Don't You Know

ACT 1

SCENE: A popular city centre bar in the North of England. In the background tedious contemporary “indie” songs can be heard. The bar is busy, full of “movers and shakers” crowded together chatting, drinking and dancing.

AT RISE OF CURTAIN, HIM is sat alone at a table looking longingly at HER, who is surrounded by others on the dancefloor.

HIM: In recent moments, it’s become apparent I’ll never be man enough for you.
Sharp of wit but it’s not enough, this night I’ll sleep alone, try and sleep off this lust,
“Pretty Boy” you say, “Pretty Boy, walk with me”.

HIM takes a sip from his flat, overpriced lager and lime and announces in a louder voice.

HIM: I’m only jealous don’t you know? I’m only jealous don’t you know? This head of
mine’s in a terrible way, now I can’t think of anything articulate to say to make you look my way. I’m only jealous don’t you know..

Now visibly intoxicated, he attempts to stare at his reflection in the cracked screen of his outdated mobile phone.

HIM: I’m sure in the future audacious attempts will be made in the vain hope that your
affections will be swayed. I’m only jealous don’t you know, I’m only jealous don’t you know... I’ll take my banged up Barbour jacket and leave.

HIM finishes his drink, plants his glass firmly on the table and makes his way to the door of the bar. HER, finishing her conversation, scans the bar for a sign of HIM.

HER: Where did he go?.
